Firearms in Winter Weather

Firearms in Winter Weather

How many of you like to perform winter activities? Do you go snowshoeing? How about cross country skiing? Maybe some of you like to do a little winter time camping like Vadar and I do? The real question is this; do you carry a firearm when performing these winter activities? If you do what is the likely hood your carry your firearm outside your clothing and exposed to the elements. With cold temperatures and the moisture from rain and snow weapons lubrication and maintenance is critical.

Now you may be expecting a lengthy article considering the subject. Truth of the matter I find it to be really easy. You may notice it’s not that much different from performing maintenance to prepare for mild conditions.

1) Field strip your firearm as if you were preparing to clean it. Take this moment to perform a visual inspection of components because it never hurts. *NOTE* If your firearm is dirty at this point why not clean it.
2) Select an oil or lubricant. If you can, check to see if the manufacture lists any temperature specific information or guidelines. If none can be found use a reliable fluid lubricant or oil. I dis-recommend grease for cold weather applications. That’s my opinion though.
3) Apply a healthy coat of oil to all metal surface areas. Rub the oil into the components. Wipe off with rag. The idea is to have the oil “soak” into the metal a bit to prevent rusting.
4) Re-assemble firearm and apply a light amount of oil to wear and movement points. By light I mean enough oil to see its application but not so much where as the oil runs off the part. If you apply to much oil you run the risk of it thickening and causing sluggish component movements or malfunctions. Again, this is where your brand of oil and its temperature tolerances can come into play.
5) Perform functions check and have fun.
6) This should be performed nightly to ensure rust prevention and a proper amount of oil is being applied. Adjust oil amounts using your best judgment.

And there you have it folks. Stoney’s quick guide to winter weather firearms lube use. Enjoy, be active, and stay safe!
